Do you love it? I do.
I use two sandalwood essential oil varieties in my therapy and products, Santalum album and Santalum Austrocaledonicum.
Origins
Santalum album is distilled from the heartwood of the Santalum species of tree grown in East India. This is what you might know as the 'original' Sandalwood, however, due to poor sustainability and crop management of the Sandal tree, among other ethical issues surrounding the cultivation of the wood and oil, it is becoming more difficult to ethically source the essential oil.
Santalum Austrocaledonicum is a close relation of the Indian Sandalwood species, sustainably grown in New Caledonia, Australia. Although not a exact chemical match to santalum album, it holds many of the same beneficial properties and is one of my favourite essential oils to use in my massage therapy and accompanying botanical products.
